What is Atmosphere Pressure?


Atmospheric pressure, also known as air pressure, is the force exerted per unit area by the weight of the Earth's atmosphere above that point. In simpler terms, it is the pressure exerted by the air in the Earth's atmosphere on everything on the Earth's surface, including objects and living organisms.

The atmosphere is composed of gases, primarily nitrogen (about 78%), oxygen (about 21%), and trace amounts of other gases such as carbon dioxide, argon, and water vapor. These gases have mass, and gravity pulls them towards the Earth's surface. As a result, the air molecules exert pressure on the Earth's surface and everything on it.

At sea level, atmospheric pressure is typically around 1013.25 millibars (mb) or 1013.25 hectopascals (hPa). This pressure decreases with increasing altitude because the density of the air decreases as you move away from the Earth's surface. Therefore, atmospheric pressure is an important factor in weather systems, aviation, and many other aspects of Earth's systems and human activities.
