The AI stunts of ‘Bad Boys’
The misuse of AI technology is increasing all over the world. From famous celebrities and leaders to common citizens, photos are also being misused with the help of AI. In the era of AI, deepfake porn has emerged as a major crisis. It is being used indiscriminately for fraud, defamation of people, etc. The growing crisis of deepfake porn in South Korean schools and universities has created a stir.
South Korean officials have detected a network that is using AI to target school and university students. Activist Bang Seo-yoon, who campaigns against deepfakes, collected statements from victims and found that in most cases school boys steal photos of students and teachers from private Instagram accounts and then share them in Telegram chat rooms by giving them pornographic form with the help of AI.
Data shows that the prevalence of deepfakes is increasing rapidly around the world, with a 500 percent increase in its cases in 2023. Cybersecurity startup Security Hero estimates that 99 percent of victims are women. These include famous singers and actresses, but while celebrities have powerful supporters to protect them, ordinary women are struggling for justice. Recently, the K-pop agency behind girlband Newsians has taken legal action against deepfake porn.
Activists say the conviction figures in deepfake cases against ordinary people are pathetic. According to police data cited by a South Korean MP, between 2021 and July this year, 793 deepfake cases were registered, but only 16 people were arrested and prosecuted. Recently, the police arrested seven people, six of whom were teenagers.
