Heavy rains occurred in some parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. After this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal has turned into a deep pressure area. The IMD further said that it may turn into a cyclone on November 27. In view of the cyclone, an alert has been issued in many districts of the state. Due to the rain, heavy traffic jams were seen in many areas including OMR Road in Chennai and traffic was affected due to waterlogging on the roads. Apart from this, some flights have also been affected.
According to the information, rain has been seen in Chennai and surrounding districts Chengalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, northern coastal cities Cuddalore and Nagapattinam including the Kaveri Delta region. Heavy rains are forecast in Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Cuddalore districts. The meeting chaired by Stalin was attended by District Magistrates and Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers who have been entrusted with the task of monitoring and coordinating rain-related works.
May turn into a cyclonic storm on November 27
The IMD posted on its social media handle saying that the pressure area is very likely to move north-northwestwards and turn into a cyclonic storm on November 27. After this, it will move north-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, touching the Sri Lankan coast for the next two days. The Meteorological Department has named the storm 'Fengal'.
After the forecast of the Meteorological Department, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin held a big meeting of officials in the Secretariat. In this meeting, he directed to deploy NDRF and state team to deal with the situation. At present, NDRF and state teams have been dispatched to Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts.
Relief camps and doctors' team ready
In the meeting, the CM was told that adequate number of relief camps and doctors' team are ready. The situation is being closely monitored. Apart from this, other arrangements have also been made. The CM has instructed the officials that people should be evacuated from low-lying areas first.
The government had already advised fishermen not to go to sea. After this, most of the boats have returned to the shore. At the same time, fishermen who went fishing in the deep sea have been asked to go to the nearest ports. Emergency operation centers have been set up at the state and district level which will work 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
