Gurmeet Ram Rahim asked for 20 days parole
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who is serving a 20-year sentence for raping two of his disciples, has once again demanded parole. Last month, he was granted 21 days' furlough. This time he has demanded 20 days' parole. The state government has forwarded his request to the Chief Election Officer in view of the model code of conduct.
According to sources, the Chief Election Officer has written a letter to the state government asking about this emergency parole, stating how correct is it to release a convict on parole during the election period? The Dera chief is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak, Haryana. He is serving a 20-year sentence for raping two of his disciples in the Sirsa ashram.
Dera chief Ram Rahim was granted 21 days' furlough on the 13th of last month. According to the information, a few days ago Baba Ram had given an application to the jail superintendent to come out of jail on parole for 20 days. The Haryana government has sent the application seeking release of the Dera chief on parole to the Chief Electoral Officer of the state, which came to the Haryana Jail Department.
Jail department officials said that under normal circumstances there is no need to give reasons for seeking parole. It is necessary to give reasons only for emergency parole. Ram Rahim's 20-day parole is left till 2024, so there is no need to mention the reasons. The official said that parole is usually approved at the divisional commissioner level. However, due to the model code of conduct, the jail department has sent the matter to the Chief Electoral Officer.
