will use artificial intelligence For Selection?
Cricket boards have turned to artificial intelligence (AI) to address the declining performance of their national team. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi revealed that AI is now a key part of their player selection process. This makes the PCB the first cricket board to openly use AI to select players from domestic leagues. Naqvi discussed the recent poor performance of the men's team, especially after losing to Bangladesh on home ground. He had earlier mentioned the need for major changes after Pakistan's early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. "The problem is that the selection committee has no pool to select players," Naqvi said. The chairman pointed out that 80% of the 150 players selected for the Champions Cup were selected using AI, with human selectors contributing only 20%.
80% of them have been selected by AI (artificial intelligence), and 20% have been selected by humans. No one can challenge it." He emphasised that this approach ensures transparency and fairness in the selection of players. "We will have records and we will all be able to see in a transparent manner who deserves a place in the team," he said. The Champions Cup, which will conclude in September, will provide comprehensive records for all players. Naqvi highlighted the problems with the previous system, where many players did not have proper records. "We had a lot of players whose records we did not have. This cup will make domestic cricket stronger, we will have a pool of 150 players," he said. The new system aims to create a strong database for future selections. The PCB chief also addressed public expectations for immediate changes. "People said 'do everything today, slit the throat of four-five players and remove them'. You cannot remove someone unless you have a better player to replace them," Naqvi remarked.
