The government has taken a big step to control the rising prices of onion during the festive season. It will bring 1,600 tonnes of buffer stock from Maharashtra to Delhi via railway. This is the first time the government is using railway transportation for kitchen.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said on Thursday that a special rake called 'Kanda Express' will depart from Lasalgaon railway station in Maharashtra and reach Kishanganj railway station in Delhi on October 20. The government hopes that this measure will help stabilize prices in the Delhi-NCR region, where buffer stock onions are currently being sold at a discounted rate of Rs 35 per kg. Retail prices of onions have reached Rs 75 per kg in many cities.

The central government is now bringing onions through railway transportation to control onion prices. This will help reduce onion prices in Delhi-NCR. The government says that it is cheaper to bring onions by rail. The cost of transporting one rake (equivalent to 56 trucks) from Nashik to Delhi is Rs 70.20 lakh. Whereas by road it costs Rs 84 lakh.
