The earthquake gave an unforgettable pain to many families in Tibet. 53 people died here and more than 40 people are injured. Dozens of buildings in big cities of Tibet were razed to the ground. Relief and rescue work is going on continuously.

According to CCTV, 29 earthquakes of magnitude three or more have occurred in Shigatse in the last five years.

Shigatse is one of the most sacred cities in Tibet. It is the seat of the Panchen Lama, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism, whose spiritual authority is second only to the Dalai Lama.
