India will have permanent entry in UNSC!
The joint statement of the meeting of QUAD countries held in America is giving good signs for India. America, India, Australia and Japan have agreed to reform the UNSC in the joint declaration. Also, in the statement issued by the White House, it has been said to support India's permanent membership in the UNSC. It is believed that if China does not create obstacles, then India can soon become a permanent member of the UNSC.
In fact, India has been demanding reform in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a long time, but due to China's opposition it was not possible. The joint statement issued after the QUAD summit held in America is now giving big indications about this reform. In this statement, not only reforms have been supported but emphasis has also been laid on including representation from Africa, Asia and Latin America for the expansion of permanent seats.
What is in the joint statement of QUAD countries?
After the QUAD summit held in America, member countries America, India, Australia and Japan issued the 'Wilmington Declaration'. This joint statement reiterated the need to reform the UNSC, as well as emphasized on making it more representative, inclusive, transparent and democratic. The statement said that the member countries of QUAD will reform the UNSC and emphasized the urgent need to make it more representative, inclusive, transparent, efficient, effective, democratic and accountable by expanding the permanent-temporary category of membership. Apart from this, there is also talk of including representation of African, Asian, Latin American and Caribbean countries in the UNSC by expanding the permanent seats.
India has been demanding reform in the UNSC for many years. It is one of the 6 major organs of the United Nations. UNSC consists of 15 member countries of the UN, out of which 5 are permanent members who have veto power. Along with this, there are other 10 temporary members, who are elected for 2 years. Temporary members keep changing every 2 years.
Its 5 permanent members are also called 'P5', these are - America, France, Russia, Britain and China. Out of these 5 permanent members, if China is left out, then India has good and strong relations with all the other countries. France has already supported India's permanent membership. The friendship between Russia and India is well known. If China does not create obstacles, then the way for permanent entry in UNSC can be cleared for India. In fact, to take a decision on any issue in UNSC, approval of 9 out of 15 members is necessary, while if any country from the 'P5' countries uses veto power, then that decision is rejected.
At the same time, from time to time there has been a demand for permanent membership from India, which has not been fulfilled till now. But the joint statement of QUAD and the statement issued by the White House have raised India's hopes.
India is a strong contender for permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. India is one of the founding members of the United Nations and is currently the fifth largest economy in the world. Apart from this, India's market is attracting big countries and industrialists, due to which its image has emerged as a global leader across the world. The successful organization of G20 last year has also strengthened India's claim. Not only this, India has made a big contribution in the 'Peace Mission' of the United Nations. Therefore, it is expected that with the reform in UNSC, the path to India's permanent membership will also be cleared.
